How Many Electrodes do I use with my TENS machine?

At least 2 electrodes need to be used. This is to complete the electrical circuit from one electrode to the other as it passes through the painful area or along the nerves leading from the pain. Nothing will be felt if only a single electrode is used. (The exception to this is when one of the larger “butterfly” or “backstrap” electrodes is used as this is, in effect, two electrodes in one).

With the duel channel TENS units it is possible to use 4 electrodes, 2 from each channel. This gives greater electrode coverage and increased pain relief.

Connector splitter leads enable you to extend wires and make 4 pins into 8 pins to allow additional electrode capacity. This means you can treat larger areas such as upper back, lower back and hips. You may find that you need to increase the intensity when using the splitter lead wires.
